🌅 Discover Kokkinos Pirgos
Kokkinos Pirgos, which means "Red Tower" in Greek, is a charming seaside village located south of Heraklion, near the town of Timbaki. The village takes its name from a tower that was once built using reddish soil at the mouth of the Geropotamos River.
Today, Kokkinos Pirgos is home to the region’s main port and has grown into a lively tourist destination. You'll find everything you need for a perfect vacation—traditional tavernas, seaside cafes, organized excursions, hiking tours, car rentals, and diving courses.
It is also the starting point for all our boat trips and private boat charters along the magical southern coast of Crete. Whether you're looking for a shared adventure or a tailor-made private cruise, Kokkinos Pirgos is where your sea journey begins!
The village boasts a long sandy beach that stretches southeast all the way to Kommos. This coastline is also a nesting ground for the famous Caretta caretta sea turtles, which lay their eggs here throughout the summer. Both the turtles and their nests are protected by law. The beach is open to western winds, offering a refreshing sea breeze.
The eastern section of the beach, extending from the port to the local airport, is known as Katalyki Beach. This is a fully organized beach with umbrellas, sunbeds, a lifeguard station, and a variety of water sports. A scenic seaside road runs along the coast, lined with cozy cafes, traditional tavernas, and seaside restaurants—perfect for enjoying a meal or drink with a beautiful view.
On the eastern edge of Katalyki, you'll find a large wetland area—one of the most important ecosystems in the region. This marsh is a haven for birdwatchers, with rare species like flamingos making regular appearances.
