Matala

Matala – The Legendary Hippie Beach of South Crete

Matala is one of the most iconic tourist destinations in Crete and undoubtedly the most famous beach in southern Heraklion. Located 68 km southwest of Heraklion, where the Messara Plain meets the Asterousia Mountains, this unique spot gained international fame for its rock-carved caves and the free-spirited hippies of the 1970s.

The village is situated close to the ancient site of Phaistos, one of the most significant Minoan palaces on the island. From Matala, you can enjoy stunning views of the Paximadia Islands across the Libyan Sea.

The beach itself is small but beautiful, with golden sand mixed with fine pebbles and crystal-clear waters. The seabed is rocky in certain areas, and waves are frequent due to the western winds. On the northern side of the beach lies a large cave often explored by divers.

Matala Beach is fully organized, offering sunbeds, umbrellas, toilets, showers, a lifeguard station, first-aid services, beach volleyball courts, snack bars, water sports, and excursion boats. Tamarisk trees offer natural shade, while the vibrant nightlife makes Matala a magnet for both relaxation and entertainment.

Don’t miss the world-famous Matala Festival every June — a celebration of music, art, and peace, held right on the beach where the spirit of the ‘70s still lives on.

Boat trips and private charters also depart from Matala, offering you the chance to explore the beautiful coastline and hidden coves of southern Crete.
